The origin of the symposium traces back to 2011 when faculty and students from the Art Program of the Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences at the University of Tsukuba in Japan planned to visit Taiwan for a study trip. To enhance opportunities for interaction with Taiwanese students, they entrusted the Graduate Institute of Art Studies at National Central University with organizing the symposium. The Graduate Institute of Art History at National Taiwan University was also invited to join, leading to the birth of the first Taiwan-Japan Art History Graduate Student’s Symposium. Since then, it has gradually become a tradition to alternate the meeting location between Taiwan and Japan each year, with one participating institute taking turns hosting the event. The progression is as follows:
This year, in 2024, with the encouragement and support of faculty from various universities, the Graduate Institute of Art History at National Taiwan Normal University is once again hosting the seminar (9th).
The goal of the symposium is to offer graduate students, regardless of their focus on Eastern or Western art history, the opportunity to present and communicate in English. Additionally, it features participation from graduate students from neighboring Japan, thereby broadening international perspectives. These elements bring the symposium closer to the scales of an international academic conference, while the preparation process allows students to appreciate the importance of work related to academic research. It is an honor and a challenge for our institute to host this event, and we humbly request your guidance and encouragement.
